Shin Shin Educational Foundation was founded in 1997 by several elderly Chinese American friends living in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the objective to help less fortunate remote or impoverished area to build primary schools in China. It expanded its organization and officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2001.
Shin Shin means prosperous and is named after an old Chinese motto:"A group effort will bring prosperity." We also believe in another Chinese motto: "It takes ten years to grow a tree, and a hundred years to foster a talent". Every existence shall leave a trace behind; every diligent effort shall have an influence. We sincerely hope that our effort is only the beginning, and that it will inspire others to join our mission to enhance the education for underprivileged children. With education, the children, their next generation, and all the generations beyond will have a better life.

Shin Shin is a non-profit organization; entirely run by volunteers, and 100% of donations go to the schools and the students. All volunteers follow the strict Shin Shin culture and discipline. Shin Shin has been collaborating with other organizations and foundations to leverage their resources and expertise, namely, Cupertino Rotary Club, SOAR Foundation, Evergreen Foundation, KQED TV, Stanford Asian Liver Center, San Francisco Library, and more.
Shin Shin realizes that the difficulty lies not in building or remodeling a new school building, but in ensuring the quality of education that the children are receiving. Shin Shin started the follow-up fund to help address some of the quality issues beyond brick and mortar. From the monetary support used to purchase needed educational equipment, scholarships, Hepatitis B vaccines, English teachers' training, libraries and book clubs, we worked hard to make a difference in those children's lives.
