Overall Guizhou is a mountainous province, and consists of steep hills, deep valleys, and rugged terrain. It was not until the Ming Dynasty that it came under Chinese domination during which it was made a province. This prompted mass migration from its surrounding provinces. Through centuries of hard work, these immigrants developed and maintained their unique life style and formed a special culture on the land. Guizhou is a relatively poor and undeveloped province. Its per capita of 3568 RMB ranks last in all of China. Its natural industry includes timber and forestry. Other important industries in the province include energy and mining. Guizhou is one of the provinces that contains the most minority groups. The minority groups account for more than 37% of the total population and they include Yao, Miao, Yi, Qiang, Dong, Zhuang, Buyi, Bai, Tujia, Gelao, and Shui. 55% of the province area is designated as autonomous regions for them. The rich population of minorities in Guizhou allows for a great many ethnic festivals throughout the lunar calendar. Huang-guo-shu Waterfall is the largest in China.

In 2007, Guizhou was selected as one of the focus provinces and was allocated funds to build five Shin Shin schools. Shin Shin's continuous effort in Guizhou during the past three years has resulted in a total of nine schools, including those already built and under construction. All counties where Shin Shin schools are located are poverty-stricken by the Chinese national standards set in 1994. Three schools have received follow-up funds support, including a computer lab in Taijiang. Three teachers attended Hunan English Teachers Training Program. Two students were awarded a Shin Shin scholarship. Members of the foundation and the local officials from Overseas Office visited all seven schools in June of 2007. Our efforts and contributions not only supported the educational development there, but also established a strong connection between overseas Chinese and local people.
